I have been asked by a few people if I could try and create a no sew skirt out of a T-shirt.
I finally ended up with this design last week.
Several designs came out of this one thought.
I can not wait to show you the other creations that I came up with.
But first let me show you this one.
Tutorial
Things you need.
- Shirt* This is an XL men's Large t-shirt
- Tape
- Scissors
- Fold the shirt in half
- Tape across the shirt leaving about 2 inches of the sleeve.
- Cut across the taped line
- *The tape just keeps your line straighter.
- Cut the sleeves where the seam is, straight back to the arm seam, do this on both sides, you want to have two ties on each side.
- * You can reinforce the seams with a little fabric glue or you can hand stitch them.
- Fold you skirt in half.
- Fold the top layer down.
- Cut 5 small slits in your skirt.
- When you open your skirt back up you should have 10 slits
- Now you are going to weave the one tie through the first slit.
- Weave the tie on each side though all 5 slits.
- Tie them to fit your size, which is the very best part, this skirt is completely adjustable.
- The other set of ties you will want to tie over the first set of ties.
- That brings it all together like a gathered back skirt

DeleteI tried making it, but it wasn't flattering. I love all your ideas, so incredibly creative. I have made 3 of your DIY, but only 1 success. What is the best quality t-shirts you buy, does it make the difference in how your projects turn out? I used Walmart t-shirts. I noticed you used Fruit of the Loom?
ReplyDeleteTinkerbell I use Hanes T-shirt, I buy the pack of 4 grey or black Wal-mart shirts sometimes are too thick I also wear a medium womens size shirt, but for this project I used a mens XL. I am so sorry they didn't work out for you:(
DeleteLove it!

DeleteI just made my own with a nearly new George organic cotton blaack T. I love it! I think it will be super cute with leggings, or to pull on over my tights on the way to yoga class. Thank you for the awesome tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Nicci:)
DeleteLove! I lost 97lbs and have so many clothes to re-use excited!
ReplyDeleteAwesome:) Congratulations What a great accomplishment:)
Deletegreat job!!!!
DeleteI just made a grey one with one of my dad's T-shirts (sadly for him, a new one) and it looks great! It's a bit voluminous at the back, but it suits me fine because I have an awfully flat bum! I'm not sure how it would look on a curvier lady though... The sleeves must have been shorter than the ones shown because I can't get one tie on top of the other so they're both visible but again I like it, I think it's really stylish. Thanks so much for a brilliant idea and a great tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much:). It does have a little bit of volume in the back but if you fold the pleats over they flatten out. I was thinking I might do a video on it, which might make it easier to see. Have a wonderful night.
DeleteLove
Anne
congratualions... you are genius!
ReplyDeleteThank you Astrid, that is sweetest compliment :)
DeleteAll of your prodjects are fantastic but for some reason I can't get this skirt down. I understand the first cut but I am not understanding the rest. Do you cut the seam on the underarm of each sleeve or only one? Also, when you create the slits are you cutting through one, two, or three layers on material? I ended up with a skirt that has one sleeve untouched and the bunching looks awkward. Thanks so much for your help and this inspiring diy's.
ReplyDeleteHey Katie,Thank yo so much for your sweet complement. Yes you cut the sleeve on both sides. inevitably you what 10 slits on the back half of the skirt. so you can weave your ties through them. I was thinking about doing a video which may explain better.:) I hope this helps. Let me know.
DeleteLove Anne
I understand now where to cut the slits but the rest is still foggy... A video would really be wonderful...And the draping vest/sweater. Thank you again for getting back to me and so quickly.
DeleteI have just discovered all of your diys and I love how simple they are. I am trying to understand this one, but its a little confusing. A video would definitely help.
ReplyDeleteI will work on that for you:)
DeleteI wear it with the tie in the front to cover up my pouch HAHA I can't believe how easy it was to make!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome:) Thank you
DeleteI was thinking of doing the same thing!
DeleteThis worked so well! My fiancee was surprised lol!
ReplyDeleteDo you think I could do this same process with a different fabric? Like something silk-y?
Thanks again!
Maybe but you might have to do a little sewing with a silk fabric.:) I am so glad it worked well.
DeleteA really smart and beautiful way to re-use a big and boring t-shirt. Thank you! Roberta
ReplyDeleteThank you Roberta:)XXOO
DeleteI'm a bigger girl (size 22/24 in bottoms) so I got a 4XL shirt to attempt this tutorial. Everything has worked out well so far, but the sleeves aren't quite long enough for me to tie them together! I'm going to hand-stitch a couple longer strips from the remainder of the shirt onto the first set of sleeve pieces to give me something longer to weave through the holes, then some ribbon onto the second set of sleeve pieces to give something decorative to tie on the outside.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about this, thanks for commenting!
DeleteI absolutely love this! But it's a little confusing. do you think you could elaborate on steps 3 and 4 a bit?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hi just wondering if a video tutorial was ever made? Been awhile since I have done any projects and this could be good refresher, just looking for more details on cutting and weaving slits :)

ReplyDeleteNo video yet? :)
ReplyDeleteNo not yet. But My plan is to go back and make a video of all of my designs. Time permitting.

ReplyDeleteA very silly question, but in your video you say to wrap the t-shirt around your waist, and you'll know the skirt will fit if the sleeves touch. Do you mean the very ends of the sleeves just literally have to touch, or is some overlap necessary? Your vision is truly brilliant. So excited to try this!
ReplyDeleteGreat question.
DeleteWrap the sleeves to make sure they over lap a little, enough to tie the sleeves together. I hope this helps.
Thank you so much
XXOOO
I made this today and it worked perfectly it was so easy to make and it was really simple . Thank you so much for this .
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing but how do you tie it.. That part makes 0 sense to me
